Taupo Attractions
The Taupo region is famous for the many geothermal and adventure attractions. Many locations are free to visit and this makes Taupo the ideal place to explore.
We are home to New Zealand’s most popular tourist attraction in terms of visitor numbers – Huka Falls Downstream you will find the magic Orakei Korako – a hidden valley with its active geothermal landscape. There are literally hundreds of kilometres of walking and mountain biking tracks that follow the lake front and wind in and out of the native bush and thermal areas.
Take a relaxing sail boat trip on the lake and view the Maori Carvings or try your hand at trout fishing – with some of the best trout fishing available anywhere in the world it is no wonder the district is considered the trout fishing capital of the world
There’s plenty to keep you thrill seekers active. Those with a penchant for heights will love tandem skydiving, bungee jumping , or parasailing on the lake. Like the views, but want to stay in the air longer? Tour our region in a helicopter or floatplane
The nautically inclined will love jet boating up the river to the base of the Huka Falls. Too tame? Then explore the raids either with power or without!
If mountain biking sounds like too much effort whilst on holiday, then an adventure quad bike ride or a leisurely horse trek will definitely fit the bill.
Taupo is the perfect place to base yourself as you explore the central North Island. Rotorua is only 50 minutes away by car and the Waitomo Caves, the ski fields of Mt Ruapehu, the renowned Tongariro Crossing and from the famous wine region of Napier and the Hawkes Bay are all 90 minutes by road.
